I am fascinated by buildings and landscapes and aim to create in my paintings a sense of place. Ruskin said of Turner, "the aim of the great, inventive landscape painter is to grasp and reproduce not the image of the place but its spirit". In practice, a difficult challenge.

I travel extensively, always with a sketchbook using watercolours, pen and pencil to make studies and many are developed into paintings in the studio. Four books have been published of Paintings and Sketches. France; followed by Leicester (out of print); then Tuscany and in September 2005, Leicester Leicestershire Rutland

The new book Leicester - Paintings and Sketches by Douglas Smith contains new drawings and sketches, with all the profits from sales going to the charity Hope Against Cancer, formerly known as The Hope Foundation for Cancer Research.

In 2017 34 original watercolours and 30 drawings became part of the RIBA Drawings Collection held by the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
