Ruth trained in fashion design at Leicester College of Art (now De Montfort University). She has held seven solo exhibitions in the centre of Leicester and further solo shows at Northampton, Brackley and Melton Mowbray. From 1990 she taught sculpture and painting in a Sculpture Group for the visually handicapped at Leicester University, later the Richard Attenborough Centre for Disability and the Arts.
Ruth is currently a member of the Leicester Sketch Club and Leicester Pastel Society and was a member of the Pastel Society from 1971 until her resignation in 1986. Her work is held in both private and public collections and is in national exhibitions and galleries across the East Midlands.
Ruth Cockayne is currently holding a solo exhibition of her recent paintings at Vaughan College, Leicester from 18 January - 14 March 2008.
